Eating Bay Area Burger Co's Lenten Special

3/4/2023

I have long loved the Bay Area Burger Company. It’s often been hard to get my hands on their smash burgers since their inception in the middle of the pandemic, but it is a testament to how good those burgers were that they now stand in a brick and mortar location on Broadway. I’m admittedly late to the game, paying them a visit. I rarely make my way into the Broadway district anymore now that I live in De Pere. I had to be in Green Bay’s downtown for less than savory business, but I knew exactly where I could find a savory lunch.

And I deserved it, didn’t i?

We know all about their burgers. They haven’t changed much since we first reviewed them in 2021, and you can find that review here. What’s new to their brick and mortar location this time of year is the Lenten season cod filet sandwich. As a child of a devout Catholic mother, I just can’t shake the habit of eating fish on Fridays– and this sandwich had my name all over it for that reason. I needed to see what my favorite burger makers in town could do with a fish sandwich.

The benefit to a brick and mortar location is the ability to sit down with a cold beer or signature cocktail. Their cocktail menu is covered in Wisconsin staples such as the old fashioned, and their beer menu highlights craft breweries both near and far. I am the kind of girl who enjoys an IPA, and on this Friday afternoon, their draft IPA came from Milwaukee Brewing– Harry Styles Checks my Boxes. He does not check my boxes, but the beer did. It’s a crisp IPA perfect for washing down salty, thin fries.
Those fries were easily the best I had enjoyed from a local kitchen when I first reviewed Bay Area Burger Co., and that statement stands. Some of my strongest memories of the Lenten season involved going to McDonalds for a Filet-O-Fish, and the fries that come out of this kitchen scratch the McDonalds itch while being made by and for Green Bay locals. Take your car a little farther and hit Broadway if the craving hits.
The cod filet sandwich hits many of the same craving notes I had on this Friday evening– crispy fish with tartar sauce, american cheese, and a bun. The Filet-O-Fish of many a Lenten evening is much improved here. No questionable fish paste– just fish with a crunchy coating. Tartar sauce? Savory, creamy, and an excellent addition. The american cheese formed a barrier between the fish and the sauce that held up even after reheating at home. The brioche bun that the restaurant is known for worked as well with fish as it did with the burger.

I’m so happy to see their food truck go brick and mortar. What was once a once in a blue moon treat can now be had at any opportunity. Their new hours allow for both lunch and dinner visits, and if you frequent the Broadway District’s many bars, you can even sneak in after a long night for a good burger to soak up the alcohol of the evening. Check out their facebook page for info on their specials and hours to plan your trip today.

Thank you to the staff for a delicious meal, and congratulations on your new location. I love seeing Green Bay’s food trucks find their way into a brick and mortar spot.
