Toast and Company - East De Pere, WI

There’s something to be said for having a weekday off work. I don’t get to do it often, but my husband and I took a Friday off together to recharge before the holiday. That day took us to Toast and Co., a brunch location in East De Pere that I’ve kept an eye on for quite awhile. Plans of all kinds got in our way from making a visit for months now, but not today. I insisted we go, so we went with the free time available to us.

Even on that Friday morning, we arrived at nearly full tables and customers awaiting coffee to take with them on their way out to work. We got a small two seat in the back of the restaurant and patiently awaited our turn. The staff was thin for the busy morning, especially when someone is needed at the coffee bar, the front desk for to go orders, and to wait the tables. The woman waiting the tables was on her own.

Scratch Restaurant - Independence, OH

The morning after Thanksgiving, it can sometimes be hard to have an appetite. My husband and I had a little time to ourselves, however, and with his father at work and his young siblings still in bed, we took the suggestion of his family to visit a little place called Scratch Restaurant not too far from our hotel. We checked the menu before leaving the hotel and decided this would be the one for us that morning.

We arrived to a little restaurant in a short strip, filled with other families and couples stopping in for breakfast that morning while they had their loved ones in town. Only one waitress was on staff in the small dining room, but she worked hard to get everyone seated and cared for despite her position. My husband and I were seated at a high top with our coffee, and we had some time to look over the menu while the waitress took care of other customers.

Vintage Cantina - Green Bay, WI

My husband and I’s first meal out to eat in Green Bay after returning from Cleveland was at Vintage Cantina downtown, a little taqueria and bar combo that I’ve watched from afar with lust. Their weekly taco features, AKA WTF’s, are a delight to see every week on their social media, and more than once I’ve found myself swearing I’d go for them when it just never happened. Christmas shopping left my husband and I hungry, so we drove into downtown during a business lul at our local restaurants to make sure we got in.

We tried to visit once before on a busy Friday evening where every single seat in the building was full, and we were relieved to find that this was not the case at 4 pm on a Saturday. We took a seat by the window to watch the cars go by, and we ordered their smoked chicken and chilis cheese dip to get us started alongside our drinks.

My husband ordered a Tecate while I opted for their house margarita. Tequila has been an acquired taste for me over the years, starting very slowly during our honeymoon in the Yucatan four years ago. I haven’t ordered a margarita when I’ve been out at a restaurant for quite awhile, but this one hit the spot with a strong citrus flavor to combat the natural taste of the tequila. One worked out for me across the whole meal.

Poke the Bear - Green Bay, WI

My husband and I first moved to Green Bay in November of 2019, and the first meal we shared together was at Poke the Bear in downtown. It was the only restaurant he knew of in the area because its where his job took him during his interview process, and he wanted to share the experience with me on that first evening. Back then, I didn’t review it. I was not as serious about my blogging back then as I am now, and I was somewhere brand new.

Now, two years later, we walked into the doors of the Northland Hotel for the first time since. It is exactly as I remember it. A luxurious looking hotel lobby out of a magazine is there to greet you before you turn to your left and into Poke the Bear. We arrived as a bridal shower was wrapping up in their back room area, so we took a seat at their high tops by the window to look out on a bright, sunny, and most importantly warm Saturday afternoon.
