At the beginning of the year, I resolved to make seven different food related resolutions. New Year’s Resolutions usually fall by the wayside very, very quickly, and it’s more than time to check in on my progress. More than halfway through the year, here’s how I’m faring so far.
1. Eat fast food only once a month. I am happy to report that I can’t remember the last time I pulled into a drive thru for anything other than Starbucks (for whatever reason, I don’t count that). My husband and I are still frequent pizza orderers, but at least I’m not giving my business to McDonalds anymore. We had a long, unhealthy relationship. It was time to move on. 2. Cut back on soda. Ahahahahaha, why do I always think I can do this? This one barely even lasted the week. 3. Try to eat 1 vegetarian meal a week. Most of my meals are vegetarian now that I’ve gone (mostly) pescetarian. My stomach issues have been better lately, so I’ve ventured into chicken and salamis again with limited issues. Still, those are very special days. This part has been super easy for me. 4. Go out less overall. Noooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooope. 5. Explore the limits of seafood I chose a really good place to try and become a pescetarian. I’ve learned a lot about cooking fish of all kinds. We regularly have steamed shrimp, mussels, and clams in this house. I’ve kept to this one as a result of trying to better manage my health. 6. Expand the pantry I went hard on this one. I can’t begin to tell you how many vinegars I’ve bought in the last six months, much less the number of new spices I have acquired in the name of good eats. I rarely lack something a recipe calls for anymore when it comes to these standard pantry goods. It cuts back a lot of the extra expenses at the time of cooking. 7. Get some new toys! I’ve been conservative on my spending as far as cooking tools go. My mother-in-law sent me an immersion blender shortly after the progenitor of this post went out last January, and it gets a lot of use on soups and smoothies. It had attachments for all kinds of things, so I didn’t feel the need to purchase anything else since. But, this reminds me to get into the market for new knives and a nice dutch oven. Mmmmm, dutch oven.
