How My Cooking Changed After Lockdown

Wisconsin was one of the first states to lift the initial lockdown on restaurants and other small businesses during the pandemic in late May. I did not go back to work until the final days of June. I’ve been back at work ever since, and many of the habits that I picked up during quarantine have--unfortunately-- began to slip. I hoped to continue a great many little quirks that I picked up while stuck inside of my home for three months with little else to do but cook and tend to my home.

One of the first things I started doing was trying to regrow scallions in my window since I go through almost two bundles of green onions every single week. This worked for me for the three months of lockdown. The moment I went back to work, I forgot all about them. They wilted to death in the window sill above my sink despite the fact I had to look at them every single day.

The slow, pleasant morning routine I developed with my husband where we had coffee together and played Animal Crossing over a home cooked breakfast fell quickly by the wayside. I couldn’t be bothered to get ready for work and cook breakfast anymore. On rare occasions, I muster the effort to fry an egg and toast a piece of bread for him-- usually just him alone. What was once a highlight of my day has again been relegated to weekends only.
